Simmental
Simmental cattle imported from Europe have been in North America for more than 40 years. The original Simmental cattle were of two lines, Swiss and Fleckvieh with the Swiss line being more of a milking animal and the Fleckvieh line having more volume and beefier. In the past 10 years, we have seen a great change in the Simmental breed in Canada and the USA with a large number of the breeders changing to solid red or black animals. They have been readily accepted by the commercial cattlemen in North America capitalizing on the increase in weight at weaning time but still keeping that solid black or red color. More pounds at weaning time mean more dollars for the producers.
At the purebred shows today in North America, it is difficult to find traditional animals on display as the trend has quickly changed to the solid colored Simmental. I see a great opportunity in Mexico for the breed and for Simmental breeders with a vision for the future. Look what your neighbors to the north are doing and where the trends are today and this could be a win, win situation for you as your commercial cattle producers look for options when purchasing a new herdsire.
